So here is a question: Why are most studies of cooperative behavior in neuronal networks investigating oscillators instead of excitable neurons (on the single cell level not neural field models)?
One problem I see is that you should not talk about synchronization (in the classical sense) if the single element does not show sustained oscillations. But this is merely a problem of language, and, moreover, already two delay-coupled excitable neurons can become one oscillator.
Don't get me wrong here, I think there are several good reasons, but still, to my mind, this is worth a discussion.
