The top cited articles were selected from the ISI/Thompson Reuters database and refer to articles published in 2012 in one of the journals from the Springer Neuroscience portfolio and cited in 2012 in any journal.
The most widely discussed articles in the social web were selected from the Altmetric Explorer and are based on the Altmetric Score. The score for an article rises as more people mention it and each category of mention – twitter, Facebook, Google+, Reddit, blogs, news outlets and Faculty of 1000 reviews – contributes a different base amount to the final score.
